CESENCE

Welcome to Cesence

There are certain things I keep coming back to.

Beauty, obviously. Biology. New technologies. Strange little discoveries. Places I don't want to leave. Treatments that seem to appear overnight. A paper that sends me down a rabbit hole at 11pm. A hotel I can't stop thinking about. A completely ordinary thing that suddenly looks different once you know a little more about it.

Cesence is a place for all of that.

It's a journal about beauty, biology, technology, aesthetics, travel, and the things that make us look at ourselves and the world around us a little differently.

I'm particularly drawn to the edges of things; the places where one subject starts becoming another. Where beauty meets science. Where medicine becomes aesthetics. Where technology quietly changes everyday life. Where an old idea gets picked up by a new technology and becomes something slightly different.

And sometimes where I simply find something and think:

Oh. That's interesting.

That's usually enough to send me looking.

I'll read the paper. I'll look at the treatment. I'll try to work out what the machine is actually doing. I'll wonder why everyone suddenly seems obsessed with something that has been around for decades. I'll follow one reference into another until I've somehow ended up researching pharmaceutical placenta.

That is more or less how things happen here.

Some things will be properly researched, with studies, treatments, ingredients, devices and technologies looked at a little more closely than a marketing page probably intended.

Other things will be much less serious.

A beautiful hotel. A restaurant. A place I want to go. A photograph. A book. A strange object. Something from a trip. Or just a small discovery that made me stop for a moment.

Not everything needs to be useful.

Sometimes it's enough to make you look twice.

I like the things that sit between categories, particularly when they make me wonder why we hadn't thought about them that way before.

Is something genuinely new, or has an old idea simply been given a very good makeover?

What is actually happening beneath the surface?

Why are we suddenly fascinated by this?

And what happens when you follow the thread a little further?

Cesence is about following those threads.

A little research. A little wandering. Beauty, science, technology, travel, and the occasional rabbit hole that gets considerably deeper than expected.

Mostly, it's a place for things I find worth looking at twice.
