CESENCE

Beauty · Biology · Science · Technology

An independent journal about beauty, biology, aesthetics and the technologies changing how we understand ourselves.

I follow the research behind the things we put on, into and around the body, with curiosity, a little scepticism, and an eye for what is genuinely interesting.

What is Cesence?

Cesence is an independent journal exploring beauty through biology, science and technology.

I write about skin, aesthetics, treatments, emerging technologies and the research behind them, with a particular interest in things that are new, genuinely interesting, or not quite as simple as they first appear.

Some subjects are highly scientific. Others are more about the culture and ideas surrounding beauty.

What connects them is curiosity.

Research

A closer look at the science behind some of the things I write about.

PDRN & polynucleotides
What are we actually injecting, and what happens afterwards?

Placental extracts
Laennec, Melsmon, Japanese medicine and the biology behind the hype.

Skin biology
Collagen, fibroblasts, extracellular matrix and what “skin quality” actually means.

Aesthetic technology
Machines, mechanisms and the science behind what happens in the clinic.

From the journal

Cesence is also a place for the things that don't fit neatly into a category.

A treatment I keep thinking about. A paper I found fascinating. Something happening in aesthetics that seems worth paying attention to. A place, a product, an idea, or occasionally an unreasonable amount of pharmaceutical placenta in my cupboard.
