When HA Stops Being Just Filler
Two small Korean studies look at HA + PN and HCC beyond volume
A prospective Korean study evaluated a hyaluronic acid + polynucleotide hybrid filler for midface ageing.
There were only 15 participants, but follow-up lasted 24 weeks. The researchers reported significant improvement in midface volume, alongside increases in skin hydration and elasticity, a reduction in transepidermal water loss, and improved patient satisfaction. The reported improvements were maintained through week 24, with no serious adverse events.
What makes the study worth noting is what the researchers measured alongside volume. They also looked at skin-barrier function and mechanical properties, treating the product as more than a conventional volumising filler.
The obvious limitation is the size of the study. It was open-label and single-centre, with only 15 participants, so it cannot tell us whether this particular combination is better than conventional HA or PN treatments.
Still, it fits a broader direction in Korean aesthetics: products designed to combine structural support with skin-quality effects, rather than treating volume and skin quality as completely separate problems.
Evidence: 🟡 Promising, but very early.
HCC and the question of skin remodelling
A separate 2026 Scientific Reports study looked at Hybrid Cooperative Complex (HCC), a combination of high- and low-molecular-weight hyaluronic acid, for facial pores and skin quality.
This one was even smaller: 10 participants, treated with two sessions and followed for 180 days.
The researchers reported improvements in pore size and skin texture, with the strongest pore refinement appearing around Day 120. Some regression occurred by Day 180, although measurements remained better than baseline.
The timing is worth paying attention to.
If the largest visible change appears months after treatment rather than immediately, it raises a different question from conventional filler: are we looking at volume, or at a slower process of skin remodelling?
The study alone can't answer that. Ten participants is far too small to establish a predictable bioremodelling effect, and a broader 2026 review of HCCs also notes that much of the clinical evidence remains limited, with some studies involving industry participation.
So I wouldn't take this as proof that HCC products “build collagen” or that pore reduction is guaranteed.
I'd take it as a small clinical signal that deserves a larger study.
Evidence: 🟡 Promising, but preliminary.
The pattern I'm watching
Both studies are small, so neither tells us very much on its own.
What they do show is where some aesthetic research is heading: away from the simple distinction between filler for volume and skin booster for skin quality, and towards products designed to influence several measurable properties of the skin at once.
That's a much more complicated proposition.
And it also means the studies need to become more complicated too.
Larger samples. Better controls. Longer follow-up. Objective measurements.
Because “skin quality” is starting to become a measurable endpoint rather than just something a clinician says looks better.
